Past, Present, and Future

A new year approaches. It seems like only last year we were worried about Y2K or watching the tragedies of 9-11. Wow, 2011.

I’m no longer that teenager I still sometimes see myself as. Mid January I turn 25. Hard to believe and a little scary as I quickly approach my 30′s. So much has happened in the last several years. Yesterday my friend Ryan Long had mentioned “you can’t get today back”. That struck a chord with me. You really can’t do today over again, so make the best of it, cherish it, live it. That is how I want to start my new year. I want to remind myself of that everyday I spend time with my beautiful daughter and wife. Carrying that over into my career and great friendships I have made in this past year.

A new year post would not be complete without the new year resolutions. But before I get into that there are a few things that happened it 2010 I want to mention. I got married. Wow, I know, a shocker to many. I managed to lose 26lbs, but I’ll mention that again in a moment. This Christmas was the first one Kara was old enough to really enjoy the experience. May marked 1 year of my career at Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods (CJRW), which I am thankful to be part of such a great company of people. My mom started college. Had an awesome time at the local Barcamps and I have made some great new friends. Refresh Conway started up, which reminds me, I better hurry up and get my presentation completed.

I don’t really recall the previous year’s new year resolutions other than just getting back in shape. I did manage to lose 26lbs early last year, going from 236 to 210, only to gain part of it back the past few months. But overall I’m slightly healthier, but only slightly. I have a few things that not only are resolutions for 2011 but things I am putting into motion and plan to accomplish.

So what is the plan for 2011.

Getting healthy. My (and family) eating habits have not been the greatest. It’s even harder when you have a picky 2.5 year old who insists in surviving on sugar. We will be making many more trips to local farmers market. Cooking more and microwaving less. Sorry Kara but many more vegetables for all of us.

I am currently up to 226lbs. I will be getting back to 210 lbs and possibly 200 lbs, dependent upon my body and muscle build. I will run my first (at least) marathon in 2011. As soon as I get some proper running shoes, requested them for my birthday in January.

Family. A family vacation. Don’t know where and when, but soon. It will be our first vacation with just us and it is much needed. Dramatically less TV time replaced with more family time. I want to get Kara in Gymnastics.

Strengthening my Career. I look forward to the challenges and growth at CJRW. As always I hope to continue to learn, contribute, and make a difference.

I have very recently found a co-founder for my startup project. I won’t say who just yet as we are in the process of the legal formalities. But I am very excited about this. We hope to launch the project in Beta by the last quarter of the new year. This project will be built on Rails, so I’m looking forward to learning something new.

I must attend a tech conference out of state. My hopes to attend SXWX are slim to none at this point but there are a few others I would like to go to.

Spiritually. I have always had a strong Christian foundation and lifestyle. However in 2010 I don’t feel that I made that my priority. This new year I want to spend a lot more time in study of Scripture, and in prayer. I want this to be more evident in my lifestyle and raise my daughter accordingly.

A few misc. goals for the new year:

  • Go rock climbing
  • Run daily
  • win the lottery or make a million dollars (throwing that one out there)
  • Breed our beagle and sell some registered puppies
  • get licensed for a concealed weapon
  • get a Taylor Acoustic Guitar (wishful thinking)
  • read a few books (currently ready 4 Hour Body by Tim Ferriss)
  • attend a big tech conference out of state
  • meet one of my fav tech/podcast entrepreneurs/hosts
  • sell two themes on the themeforest.net marketplace
